MDDI's Response to PQ on Reasons for Discontinuing "The Little Book Box" Service and NLB's Alternative Initiatives for Convenient Access to Children's Books
4 November 2026
Parliament Sitting on 4 November 2026
Question for Written Answer
35. Mr Alex Yeo asked the Minister for Digital Development and Information (a) what are the reason(s) for the National Library Board’s (NLB's) decision to discontinue 'The Little Book Box' service from 1 April 2027; and (b) what alternative initiatives NLB has to continue providing convenient access to curated books for children, particularly for families who may have limited time to visit public libraries, so as to encourage reading from a young age.
Answer
'The Little Book Box' was first introduced in 2020 as a pilot service to deliver curated children’s books to families. Despite efforts to promote the service, subscription numbers have remained below targets and do not justify its continuation. The National Library Board (NLB) will therefore discontinue the service from 1 April 2027.
NLB remains committed to nurturing a love for reading from young, including through its collections and programmes across its extensive network of 28 libraries, as well as Nodes across the island. From January 2027, families with children aged six years and below can participate in NLB’s free A Book A Day reading programme, which offers curated book recommendations, reading tips and activities. Parents can also access DiscoveReads on the NLB website for reading resources and activities for children aged 18 months to nine years old.
