Speech by Minister S Iswaran at the completion of the Digital Archives of Singapore Tamil Arts

Ladies and Gentlemen
Good evening. I am happy to join you all today to celebrate the completion of the project on the Digital Archiving of Singapore’s Tamil Arts. I know many of you here have contributed generously to this project, and I want to thank you all for being a part of this excellent effort.
This project was initiated by the Centre for Singapore Tamil Culture (CTSC). When its director, Arun Mahizhnan, approached me last year with the idea of setting up the CSTC, I encouraged him to go ahead. I thought that it would be a worthwhile endeavour that would help strengthen the multi-cultural foundations upon which Singapore was built.
Custodians of Singapore’s History and Heritage
As Custodians of Singapore’s history and heritage, our libraries and archives are dedicated to preserving our cultural and literary heritage. To this end, the National Library Board (NLB) works closely with various communities on digital projects in vernacular languages. In collaboration with the Tamil Digital Heritage Group (TDHG), NLB has successfully digitised and hosted the various Tamil collections on its online portal. These materials are now easily accessible by all Singaporeans and the wider Tamil audience across the world. It is through NLB’s efforts that we continue to enrich our national collection in the digital era for generations to come.
Community-Driven Projects Play a Part in Preserving Singapore's Heritage
It is also critical that communities play an active part in complementing the efforts of our libraries. Community records and heritage materials not only re-tell historic narratives that would otherwise be lost, but they also empower and motivate individuals to take an active role in exploring and celebrating their own cultural heritage.
It is therefore heartening that this project was started by a community group who reached out to individuals and organisations in the areas of literature, theatre, music and dance. It is the contributions of these prominent writers, artists, musicians and dancers that have made it possible to have an invaluable repository of Tamil culture in Singapore.
Singapore has had a very vibrant performing arts scene since the 1950s. Tamil theatre was no exception. Even though several hundred plays were staged before independence, there has been sparse documentation of theatre scripts, posters and photographs. Hence, when Tamil theatre pioneer, Mr S.S. Sarma, heard of this digitisation project, he promptly contributed theatre posters and souvenir publications from the 1960s. Fourth generation Bhrathanatyam dancer, Durga Manimaran, has also generously contributed archive recordings of her own dance performances, which she hopes will serve as valuable resources for dance students and artists, even beyond the community of classical Indian dance practitioners.
Legacy for Generations
The benefits of such contributions are far-reaching. They not only serve as references for present and future generations, but will also encourage others to explore and celebrate their own communities. Inspired by this collaboration, theatre practitioners within the Malay community have also welcomed a similar initiative to document the rich Malay theatre heritage in Singapore. I am excited to see the stories the Digital Archive of Singapore Malay Theatre will tell in the near future.
In fact, I hope that this project will encourage greater cross-cultural appreciation and serve as a source of inspiration to create new works. Perhaps in the future, we can look forward to the translation of an old Tamil novel into Malay, or a reinterpretation of a Tamil classic.
Conclusion
The Tamil arts and its enduring legacy have been made possible thanks to the digital archives, which are available to anyone at virtually no cost. We also just heard about the Portal on Singapore Tamil Culture undertaken by CSTC. It is intended to be a reliable and well-researched source of information on key aspects of Tamil culture as practiced in Singapore. It gives me great pleasure to inaugurate this Portal today.
This is a commendable achievement, and I welcome more of such community efforts to preserve and promote Singapore’s cultural heritage. Thank you.

சிங்கப்பூர்த் தமிழ்க் கலைகள் மின்தொகுப்புகளின் நிறைவை உங்களுடன் சேர்ந்து கொண்டாடுவதில் மகிழ்ச்சி அடைகிறேன். உங்களில் பலர் இந்தத் திட்டங்களுக்கு மனமுவந்து உதவியிருக்கிறீர்கள் என்பது எனக்குத் தெரியும். இந்த அற்புதமான முயற்சியில் பங்கெடுத்துக் கொண்டதற்கு உங்கள் அனைவருக்கும் எனது மனமார்ந்த நன்றி.
இந்தத் திட்டம் சிங்கப்பூர் தமிழ்ப் பண்பாட்டு மையத்தால் தொடங்கப்பட்டது. அந்த அமைப்பைத் தொடங்கும் திட்டத்துடன் அதன் இயக்குநர் திரு அருண் மகிழ்நன் கடந்த ஆண்டு என்னை அணுகியபோது நான் அவருக்கு ஊக்கமூட்டினேன். பல கலாசாரங்களைக் கொண்ட வலுவான அடித்தளத்தில்தான் சிங்கப்பூர் உருவாக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அப்படிப்பட்ட அடித்தளத்துக்கு சிங்கப்பூர்த் தமிழ்ப் பண்பாட்டு மையம் மேலும் வலுவூட்டும் என்பது எனது நம்பிக்கை.
சிங்கப்பூரின் வரலாறு, மரபுடைமை ஆகியவற்றின் பாதுகாவலர்கள்சிங்கப்பூரின் வரலாற்றையும் மரபுடைமையையும் பாதுகாக்கும் அமைப்பு என்ற முறையில் நமது நூலகங்கள் நமது கலாசாரத்தையும் இலக்கியப் பாரம்பரியத்தையும் கட்டிக் காப்பதைக் கடப்பாடாகக் கொண்டுள்ளன. அந்த நோக்கத்தில் தேசிய நூலக வாரியம் பல்வேறு சமூகங்களுடன் மின்னாக்கத் திட்டங்களில் இணைந்து செயல்பட்டு வருகிறது. தமிழ் மின்மரபுடைமைக் குழுவுடன் இணைந்து பல்வேறு தமிழ்த் திரட்டுகளை தேசிய நூலக வாரியம் வெற்றிகரமாக மின்மயமாக்கி உள்ளது. இந்த ஆவணங்களை சிங்கப்பூரர்களும் உலகளாகவிய தமிழர்களும் எளிதாகப் பயன்படுத்திக் கொள்ளலாம். தேசிய நூலக வாரியத்தின் முயற்சியால்தான் நாம் தொடர்ந்து நமது தேசிய திரட்டை எதிர்காலத் தலைமுறைகளின் நலனுக்காக வளப்படுத்தி வருகிறோம்.
சிங்கப்பூரின் மரபுடைமையைக் கட்டிக் காப்பதில் சமூகத் திட்டங்கள் பங்களிக்கின்றன
நமது நூலகங்களின் முயற்சியோடு சமூகங்களும் தங்கள் பங்கை ஆற்றுவது மிக முக்கியம். சமூகப் பதிவுகளும் மரபுடைமைப் பொருட்களும் நமது வரலாற்றுக் கதைகள் தொலைந்து போகாமல் காக்கின்றன. மேலும் அவை தங்கள் சொந்தப் பாரம்பரியத்தை ஆராய்வதிலும் கொண்டாடுவதிலும் தனி நபர்களுக்கு ஊக்கமும் வலுவும் தருகின்றன.
அதனால்தான் இந்தத் திட்டம் ஒரு சமூகக் குழுவால் தொடங்கப்பட்டது என்பது மன நிறைவளிக்கிறது. அந்தக் குழு, இலக்கியம், நாடகம், இசை, நடனம் ஆகிய பல்வேறு துறைகளில் தனி நபர்களையும் சமூகக் குழுக்களையும் அணுகி அவர்களிடமிருந்து ஆவணங்களைப் பெற்றுள்ளது. பிரபலமான எழுத்தாளர்கள், நாடகக் கலைஞர்கள், இசைக் கலைஞர்கள், நடனமணிகள் ஆகியோரின் நன்கொடைகள்தான் சிங்கப்பூர்த் தமிழ்க் கலைகள் குறித்த விலைமதிப்பற்ற களஞ்சியத்தைச் சாத்தியமாக்கியுள்ளது.
ஆயிரத்துத் தொள்ளாயிரத்து ஐம்பதுகளிலிருந்து சிங்கப்பூரில் நிகழ்கலைகள் துடிப்புடன் செயல்பட்டன. அதற்குத் தமிழ் மேடை நாடகங்களும் விதிவிலக்கல்ல. சுதந்திரத்துக்கு முன் பல நூறு மேடை நாடகங்கள் அரங்கேறி இருந்தாலும் அவற்றின் வசனப் பதிவுகள், சுவரொட்டிகள், புகைப்படங்கள் போன்றவை பதிவு செய்யப் படாமலே இருந்தன. எனவே, இந்த மின்னாக்கத் திட்டத்தைப் பற்றிக் கேள்விப்பட்ட நாடக முன்னோடியான திரு எஸ் எஸ் சர்மா, தம்மிடமிருந்த சுவரொட்டிகளையும் நினைவு மலர்களையும் உடனே வழங்கினார். அவற்றில் சில 1960களுக்கு முற்பட்டவை. நான்காம் தலைமுறை பரதநாட்டியக் கலைஞரான துர்கா மணிமாறனும் தனது நாட்டிய நிகழ்ச்சிகளின் ஒளிப்பதிவுகளை வழங்கி உதவியிருக்கிறார். பாரம்பரிய இந்திய நடனக் கலைஞர்களையும் தாண்டி மற்ற நடன மாணவர்களுக்கும் கலைஞர்களுக்கும் இவை சிறந்த வளங்களாகத் திகழும் என்று அவர் நம்புகிறார்.
பல தலைமுறைகளுக்கான சொத்து
இந்தப் பங்களிப்புகளின் பலன்கள் அதிகத் தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்தக்கூடியவை. இக்காலத் தலைமுறைக்கும் வருங்காலத் தலைமுறைக்கும் அவை மேற்கோள்களாகத் திகழும். தங்கள் சொந்தச் சமூகங்களை ஆராயவும் கொண்டாடவும் இது மற்ற சமூகத்தினரையும் ஊக்குவிக்கும். இந்தக் கூட்டு முயற்சியால் உத்வேகம் பெற்றுள்ள மலாய்ச் சமூகத்தின் நாடகக் கலைஞர்கள், சிங்கப்பூரின் மலாய் நாடகப் பாரம்பரியம் குறித்த ஆவணங்களைத் திரட்டத் தொடங்கியுள்ளனர். விரைவில் சிங்கப்பூர் மலாய் நாடக மின்தொகுப்பையும் நாம் எதிர்பார்க்கலாம்.
இந்தத் திட்டம் கலாசாரங்களுக்கு இடையிலான புரிந்துணர்வை ஊக்குவிக்க உதவும் என்றும் புதிய படைப்புகளை உருவாக்க உந்துசக்தியாக இருக்கும் என்றும் நான் நம்புகிறேன். உதாரணத்திற்கு, ஒரு பழைய தமிழ் நாவல் மலாயில் மொழி பெயர்க்கப்படுவதையோ அல்லது ஒரு தமிழ் இலக்கியம் வித்தியாசமாக படைக்கப்படுவதையோ எதிர்காலத்தில் நாம் காணக்கூடும்.
நிறைவு
அப்படிப்பட்ட ஒரு சாத்தியத்தை இந்த மின் ஆவணங்கள் உருவாக்கியுள்ளன. அவற்றை எவரும் இலவசமாகப் பயன்படுத்திக் கொள்ளலாம். சிங்கப்பூர்த் தமிழ்ப் பண்பாட்டு மையம் உருவாக்கியுள்ள சிங்கப்பூர்த் தமிழ் பண்பாட்டுத் தளம் குறித்தும் சற்றுமுன் நீங்கள் தெரிந்துகொண்டீர்கள். சிங்கப்பூரில் பின்பற்றப்படும் தமிழ்ப் பண்பாடு குறித்த முக்கியத் தகவல்கள் ஆய்வு செய்யப்பட்டு, நம்பகத்தன்மையுடன் தொகுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. அந்தத் தளத்தை இன்று தொடங்கி வைப்பதில் நான் பெரும் மகிழ்ச்சி அடைகிறேன்.
மிகவும் பாராட்டத்தக்க ஒரு சாதனை. சிங்கப்பூரின் கலாசார மரபுடைமையைப் பாதுகாக்கவும் மேம்படுத்தவும் இதுபோன்ற இன்னும் பல சமூக முயற்சிகள் மேற்கொள்ளப்படும் என்று நான் நம்புகிறேன். நன்றி.
